Kilgores – Far and wide – I’m looking for you (not in a creepy way)

A goal for 2022 is sorting out my Kilgore line – well, I have 2 and I’m pretty sure they will merge into one at some point, just not sure where.

I also have a large number of DNA matches on my paternal grandfather’s Kilgore line that match up to my paternal grandmother’s Mason/Powers line. It looks like a group of Kilgores moved into Marion County, TN and well – birds and bees and all that – that needs to be figured out.

So, here is an introduction to my Kilgore line:

My grandfather, who is 96 at this writing, is the son of George W Jones and Lula Leeanna Kilgore (she was first married to Tom Hutchins) of Gadsden, Etowah County, Alabama.

Lula Kilgore (3rd from left) and brother Lonzo Kilgore (4th from left)

Lula and her brother Lonzo Albert Kilgore were the children of John Samuel Marion Kilgore (9 Feb 1856-11 Jul 1925) and Nancy Elizabeth Hammond (1855 – 24 Oct 1946). Personal note: when my husband saw the picture above he looked at me and said “well, it is good to see where you get that look from. It looks like the women in your family have passed it down over the generations” I agree, I get that look from time to time.

John S M Kilgore and Nancy E Hammond Kilgore

John S M Kilgore was born in Calhoun County, AL to William H (Billy) Kilgore (1816-1880) and Annis McCullars (ers, ors, ough?)

John was 1 of nine children born to William and Annis:

  • Matilda b. 1843, married Noah Jennings Calhoun County, AL
  • Jane b 1848 d 1924 Calhoun County AL, married Charles Haynes
  • Ellen b 1848, married J Ford
  • Mary b 1849 (1 possible match, she may not have married)
  • William b 1851 d 1905, married Prena Frances
  • Edmond b 1853 d 1935, married Elizabeth Parker
  • John Samuel Marion b 1856 d 1925
  • John David b 1859
  • Sallie b 1864

Edmund and Elizabeth Parker Kilgore

This family of Kilgores was in Calhoun County Alabama early, when it was still called Benton County. William H was born in Georgia, along with every other Kilgore I can find (joke, sort of).

So, was William H Kilgore the son of William Kilgore (I swear I can’t sigh loud enough over all the same names) and Mary Duke? Probably… Maybe… It seems as if each group of Kilgores I find has a William (or 2) in each generation.

So, 2022, I’m going to finally sit down (on more than one occasion I’m sure) and sort though all the Kilgores in Georgia and Alabama in the 1800s, and the group in Marion County Tennessee and get this line solved. Please don’t tell me about all the Kilgore trees on various sites… I know they are there, but I have a few questions that have yet to be answered about some of these trees. Plus, what is the point of just copying work from someone else 🙂

If you are related to the Kilgores of east Alabama and Georgia please reach out as I’d love to hear more stories about this family. I’ll post bios on my Kilgore line over the next few weeks.

All for now.
